New Consultation on Fireworks in Scotland – (local event on 18th Feb)
The Minister of Community and Safety, Ash Denham, has set up a consultation on fireworks and the government would like to:
Hear your views on how you use and enjoy fireworks, and the impact fireworks have on you and your community. I would like to hear your views and ideas on what action we can take to ensure fireworks continue to be enjoyed safely and responsibly.
Update: Public Meeting on Fireworks
Friends,
On the 26th of November the Pollokshields Community Council held a general meeting on the dangerous use of fireworks. Thank you to all the residents who attended and submitted questions. 150 people were in attendance to talk to a panel ranging from Police, Fire Services, and various Council Departments. Our 3 local Councillors, and local MSP were also in attendance. Our local MP was unable to make it as they were attending a debate on fireworks in the House of Commons.
Residents had an opportunity to share their experiences in the days around Bonfire Night, and submitted questions were answered by the panel along with questions being taken from the audience.
Panel members agreed that although a co-ordinated action plan was in place the response of public agencies could have been better. As a result a working group comprising of residents, community organisations, elected representatives, and public agencies (including the Police) will work together to address the issues of fireworks and wider youth disorder that were discussed. The group will help identify what resources and initiatives will be required and to ensure a repeat of this months events do not happen again.
Full minutes of the meeting will follow. If you are interested in becoming a part of the stakeholder group then please get in touch by attending our next community council meeting on Monday 3rd Dec, 7pm, Pollokshields Community Centre.

There is a need for a community led approach to this matter.
Over the course of the coming months the Community Council will keep residents updated on the progress of the new group.
Thank you
